«Cuando desembarqué en Buenos Aires, no sé si ya lo conté, lo hice después de presenciar lo que se llamó luego la batalla de Punta del Este, entre la flota británica y el Graff Spee, un acorazado de bolsillo alemán que pirateaba por las costas atlánticas argentinas y las chilenas del océano Pacífico. Luego entramos en Buenos Aires, después de una travesía peligrosa, en la que María Teresa se había puesto enferma, teniendo que pagar nuestro traslado a segunda clase, cosa que nos mermó en mucho el poco dinero que llevábamos. Pero todo nos lo solucionó una persona que, entre otras, queridísimas luego, nos esperaba en el puerto: nuestro grande y generoso Gonzalo Losada, un nuevo editor lleno de ingenio e iniciativas, un verdadero adelantado, quien nos resolvió nuestra tan incierta situación. Él me contrató en seguida mi nuevo libro, Entre el clavel y la espada, que yo había comenzado a escribir en Francia, durante mis desveladas noches como locutor de la radio Paris-Mondial.»

When I disembarked in Buenos Aires, I don't know if I already wrote about it, I did so after witnessing what was later called the battle of the Punta del Este, between the British flotilla and the Graff Spee, a German pocket battleship that was pirating along the Argentine Atlantic and Chilean Pacific coasts.  (...)  Then we entered Buenos Aires, after a dangerous passage, in which María Teresa had gotten sick, having to pay for our transfer to second class, something that greatly depleted the little money that we had.  But everything was solved by a person who, among others, much loved later on, waited for us at the port:   our great and generous Gonzalo Losada, a new editor full of ingenuity and initiative, a real advance, someone who resolved our very uncertain situation.  He immediately got a contract for my second book, Between the carnation and the sword, which I begun in France, during my sleepless nights as a radio announcer on Paris-Mondial.
