En la clase de Soto (Performance Lab)

La clase de Soto tiene lugar los lunes de 19:00 hasta 21:30 en San Francisco en el Estudio de Baile de Mary Sano. En la clase de Soto realizamos una especie de teatro en movimiento completamente improvisado en el momento-- pero claro, a base de ciertos principios de escenificación junto a combinaciones de expresión emocional, corporal y de la imaginación, incorporamos también la voz tanto con palabras como sonidos. Muchas veces usamos historias personales como punto de referencia e inspiración. Siempre sale algo nuevo, algo inesperado que nos abre los ojos y nos renueva los sentidos.

Soto's class takes place on Monday's from 7pm to 9:30pm at Mary Sano's dance studio in San Franciscio. In Soto's clas we do a type of physical theater in movement that is completely improvised on the spot-- but of course, based on certain principals of staging along with combinations of imaginative, emotional and physical expression, incorporating voice using words and sound. Often we use personal stories as a point of departure and inspiration. Something new always arises, something unexpected which opens our eyes and renews our senses.

Classic Trucks

This weekend I was inspired to do some photography when I visited Fairfax and saw some old classic trucks. They reminded me of my father. My father loved his classic trucks. There were three as I recall, a Chevy from the 40's and later one from the early 50's, turquoise green, then came the more modern beige-brown one. My father already appreciated their classic artistic lines, even before they technically qualified as antiques. I try to imagine what the poetry of it was for him. He had grown up in Queens, New York, and moved to Taos, New Mexico, as a young man, along with mother, when I was still a young toddler. Together we set out to add on to our adobe home. Side by side, we learned to mix the mud with straw and sand to get the right consistency to splatter and smooth over the adobe bricks. But it was the trucks I was telling you about, I am imagining the trucks. The old trucks he loved. He did not want to get rid of them even when they were leaked oil and got rusty-- though my mother prodded. I think he loved those round classic lines. I wonder what the trucks must have represented: something to do with his innate artistic aesthetic, he came from a highly educated cultured family so perhaps it was simutaneously an act of rebellion, the country rural life, the West, the poetry of traveling on Route 66 in a Chevy, independence far from the city life he had known, creating a life for himself. There is something rugged, purposeful, practical and artistic all at the same time about these trucks.

Daniel Potter's Work

The following are photographic extracts from three paintings by artist Daniel Potter. He studied and worked closely with Ann O'Hanlan for many years. Currently he lives in Fairfax in Marin County, teaches art to children and practices and teaches Buddhist meditation. I first met Daniel in 1981 when, in addition to his involvement with visual arts, he was actively involved in acting and directing a fusion of experimental and classical theatre.

Los siguientes son extractos fotográficos de tres pinturas por el artista Daniel Potter. El estudió y trabajó estrechamente con Ann O'Hanlan por muchos años. Actualmente vive en Fairfax en el condado de Marin, enseña arte a los niños y practica y enseña meditación buddhista. Yo lo conocí en 1981 cuando, aparte de sus actividades en las artes visuales, también estaba involucrado en la actuación y dirección de una fusión de teatro experimental y clásico.
