WordTemple host Katherine Hastings talks first this month with giovanni singleton about her new book, Ascension. A collection of serial poems written during jazz musician and spiritual leader Alice Coltrane's 49-day transition throught the bardo - and other poems as well - Ascension takes us through a daily practice of meditations on the nature of "self," and longing for less suffering in the world. 

Then, Lorena Papayone Wolfman reads from her collection, My Mother's Necklace / El Collar de mi Madre. This collection is bilingual and emerges from a dreamlike ocean of imagery, feeling and sounds. The poems also have their roots in Wolfman's experiences at the IV International Poetry Festival in Granada, Nicaragua, where poetry was celebrated as the conscience of the Earth.

Wolfman reads from her collection My Mother’s Necklace/El Collar de mi Madre (Lapizlazuli Editions 2011).  Dedicated to “both the woman who was my mother and, in a spiritual sense, to the divine feminine principal, the Goddess in her myriad forms,” this collection is bilingual and emerges from a dreamlike ocean of imagery, feeling and sounds.  The poems also have their roots in Wolfman’s experiences at the IV International Poetry Festival in Grandada, Nicaragua where poetry was celebrated as the conscience of the Earth.  “The poem is a dance of words on the wind, an initiation ceremony, a semiotic textile that pours out through the universe of meaning.  This book is a mystical journey through language and the body, through mythology and archetype…” — Nicasio Urbina

Poetry in West Marin - Poesía en el Oeste de Marín

El once de marzo fui a Point Reyes para presentar mi poesía en el programa de radio de Brian Kirven, escritor bilingüe, poeta en las escuelas, maestro de inglés, y fiel cultivador de cultura literaria en su comunidad en el oeste del condado de Marín. El mes pasado también fui al oeste de Marin para participar en una lectura de poesía junto con un poeta peruano en una noche de poesía en el Blackbird Café de Inverness.  Ambos eventos fueron bilingües. La lectura de febrero formó parte del programa ROAR (Reach Out and Read) establecido por CB Lyn Follet, la poeta laureada del condado. Brian Kirven

Learnin' Kirven (2012-03-11).






On March eleventh I went to Point Reyes to share my poetry on the Brian Kirven's radio program on KWMR.  Brian is bilingual, a writer, poet in the schools, English teacher and faithful cultivator of literary culture in his community in West Marin.  Last month I was also in West Marin participating in a poetry reading along with a peruvian poet in an evening of poetry at the Blackbird Café.  Both events were bilingual.  The February reading was part of the ROAR (Reach Out and Read) program established by CB Lyn Follet, poet laureate of Marin County.  To listen to the program you can click on the following link: Learnin' Kirven (2012-03-11).
