Mother Tongue

Before words

there were interstitial syllables.

The origin of language

is vibration,

though some say

it is silence.

Before the relentless grind of routine,

everything was sketched

from telluric and interstellar oscillations,

primordial gestures,

murmuring frequencies—

Cells multiplying

and spilling into form.

Not into a single rock,

fish,

cloud,

horse,

vine,

or lizard,

but all of those

and so much more,

continuously transfiguring,

migrating endlessly

under the gaze of God:

Himalayan mountains,

the Milky Way,

Illyrian sea,

mist of forgotten breezes,

the boundless memory

of the ant,

whose tracks are laid out

like ancestral star maps.

Whatever word,

or name

crosses God's lips

is divine spiral breath

becoming tree,

pomegranate,

rose,

like the morning dew

rising with each inhale,

as though it were expanding

under the wings of the pitacoche,

with its first flutters

spreading the sweetness

of the song

that fills our lungs.

Only the god of dance

could resurrect us in this way

from the endless grind of routine.

The divine gesture

accelerates,

heaves,

pulses,

flows within.

The body responds

to the first callings

and emerges from the embrace of the sea,

where the stars have always drunk from the deep.

Now fingers, arms, ribs rise;

wrists, elbows, shoulders rotate,

while hips shimmy across life's rhythms.

The body's embrace encompasses the sky

once again shimmering

with its silvery glow.

Smooth stones shine

beneath the soles of our bare feet.

And for the first time,

we return to words

having rediscovered the gift

of singing the world into being—

Lengua materna

Antes de las palabras

existían las sílabas intersticiales.

el origen del lenguaje

es la vibración,

aunque algunos dirían

que es el silencio.

Antes del ajetreo utilitario

el trazo de todo surgía

de oscilaciones telúricas

e interestelares,

gestos primordiales,

frecuencias murmurantes—

Células multiplicándose

y derramándose en forma.

No en una roca

ni pez

ni nube

ni caballo

ni vid

ni lagarto,

pero todo aquello

y algo más,

continuamente transfigurándose,

migrando sin cesar

bajo la mirada de dios:

montañas himalayas,

vía láctea,

mar ilirio,

vaho de brisas olvidadas,

la memoria infinita

de la hormiga,

con sus caminos

como mapas de constelaciones originarias.

Cualquier palabra,
cualquier nombre
que cruce los labios de dios
es la espiralización divina
convertida en árbol,
granada,
rosa,
como el rocío matutino
levantándose con cada inspiración,
como si se expandiera

debajo de las alas del pitacoche,
que con su primer aleteo

desparrama la dulzura

de la canción

que llena nuestros pulmones.

Solo el dios de la danza
podría resucitarnos de esta manera
del interminable trajín de la costumbre.

El gesto divino
se acelera,
respira,
palpita,
fluye por dentro.

El cuerpo responde

a los primeros designios

y emerge del regazo del mar,

donde las estrellas beben desde siempre.
Se elevan los dedos, los brazos, las costillas;
giran muñecas, codos, hombros,
mientras las caderas acentúan el ritmo de la vida.
Su abrazo abarca el cielo
que ha vuelto a titilar
con fulgor primario.

Las piedras lisas
bajo las plantas de los pies,

brillan.

Y por primera vez,

volvemos a las palabras

con la redescubierta facultad

de llamar al mundo por su nombre—

toponymy

the mole moves

beneath the skin of the world

perhaps living without a name

perhaps it doesn’t mind

perhaps having few points of reference

from above

but from below it knows everything

from the inside,

from its scent—

that original orientation—

there it runs through hidden

places without toponyms,

without spoken tongues.

On the surface

the references are different

we no longer remember

the syllables rooted in the earth

vibrating with breath

and pulse.

And as for us late arrivals,

some names

have been shared by the first peoples,

heirs to the original astonished murmurs

that passed through the valleys,

mountains, and high plains

nomadic dreams,

still alive within them,

the magnetic orientation that recognizes

all the continental paths

of the great Chichimeca—

its night skies,

its portals hidden among the hills,

what the wind brings,

the meaning

of the color of the stones,

the temperature of each tree’s shadow,

a dappled dweller of these lands…

They have given us syllables

magnetized

to the vertical soul of this place—

“úha”

“míra úr’i”

unable to pronounce them well,

yet we cling to these fragments

babbled by our dreams

like verses

of an ancestral song,

shards of what remains

of an enormous vessel

that once held water.

Our thirst betrays

the truth—

we are all

dying of thirst—

Toponimia

El topo viaja bajo la tierra

quizá viva sin nombre

quizá sin importarle

quizá de arriba

tenga pocos referentes

pero de abajo lo sabe todo

desde adentro,

desde él olfato

orientación primigenia

ahí corre por recónditos

lugares sin topónimos,

sin apelativos.

En la superficie

los referentes son otros

ya no tenemos recuerdo

de los nombres originales

que vibran con aliento

y pulso.

A los allegados tardíos,

algunos nombres

imantadas

al alma vertical de estas tierras

—"úha"

"míra úr'i"—

sin poderlos pronunciar bien,

nos aferramos a estos fragmentos

que nuestros sueños balbucean

como versos

de un canto ancestral

añicos de lo que queda

de una enorme vasija

que retenía el agua.

Nuestra sed delata

la verdad—

todos

nos estamos muriendo de sed

por falta de agua.

—Lorena Wolfman

no te imaginas

 no te imaginas

como era el cielo

ni el canto de los cenzóntles

ni el murmullo de los pirules

antes de la luz

no te imaginas

desde que tan lejos

se distinguía

una voz en el aire

o el llanto de un borrego perdido

en las montañas colindantes

pues el viento

que corría libre

vibraba con ríos

y entraba y salía

de cavernas subterráneas

traía recados

como el olor fino y puro

de la flor de la pitahaya

              —que ya no te imaginas

—Lorena Wolfman (2016, 2025)

you can't imagine

you can’t imagine

what the sky was like

nor the song

of the mockingbirds

nor the whisper

of the pepper trees

before the light

you can’t imagine

from how far away

one could hear

the cry of a lost lamb

in the neighboring mountains

for the wind,

running freely,

hummed with rivers

and slipped in and out

of underground caverns,

carrying messages

like the scent

pure and sharp

of the pitahaya blossom—

which you can

                no longer imagine

—Lorena (Translation, 2025)

Bajo la piel

Aquí,

arriba de los túneles

que corren debajo

de la piel de la Tierra,

desde aquí,

alzándose los cerros

cuidan los horizontes

con su vigía ancestral.

Abajo

cavernas, grutas,

vetas de níquel, mercurio, oro,

vástagos de sangre telúrica.

Allí, abajo

retirándose

silenciosos espejos de agua,

almas
