The day you were born

for Violeta

The day you were born
the day the winds of the universe
conspired to call your name
to create your voice
the day the sound of your voice
made the leaves on the trees tremble
for the first time
the day the first light of your eyes
made the butterflies quiver in mid-flight
I celebrate that day
the day you were born
the day we celebrate today
with our hands interlaced and our heads uplifted
and with our open laughter of lightning joy & cinnamon
of lemon trees suns & parrots
of sandlewood beaches & adventure
this laughter that rings
rings in the folds of the mountains
rings in the vastness of the skies
rings in the keeness of the stars
rings rings
our laughter
that rings in free flight--

El día que naciste

a Violeta

canturrea
en la oscuridad sin luna
sin mente sin luna
mientras me tiendo de lado
sobre el piso de madera
del estudio Mountain Home
mientras la dama durmiente la montaña Tamalpais
yace cerca soñando en la oscuridad
y la noche sigue cantando
cantando--

The night sings on

Words don't arise
from the vastness
of being
of movement
of the sky filled with cricket song
don't arise
from the vastness of all that is unseen
from darkness
from the shrill harmonizing
drone of a summer night
words don't arise
it is only the force of habit
tonight only the force of habit
the habit of language
I bring to this page
upon which I scrawl in purple letters
as the night outside hums hums
hums on
in the darkness of no moon
no mind no moon
as I lay curled on my side
upon the wooden floor
of Mountain Home Studio
the slumbering lady Mount Tamalpais nearby
lays dreaming in the darkness
and the night sings on
sings on--

Sólo una vez

--a a.z.

sólo una vez me besaste
fue suficiente
como si me dijeras
en esta vida
esta la más preciosa
aquí lo tienes todo
resumido en un instante
fugaz y para siempre
cómo me siento hacía ti

Classic Trucks

This weekend I was inspired to do some photography when I visited Fairfax and saw some old classic trucks. They reminded me of my father. My father loved his classic trucks. There were three as I recall, a Chevy from the 40's and later one from the early 50's, turquoise green, then came the more modern beige-brown one. My father already appreciated their classic artistic lines, even before they technically qualified as antiques. I try to imagine what the poetry of it was for him. He had grown up in Queens, New York, and moved to Taos, New Mexico, as a young man, along with mother, when I was still a young toddler. Together we set out to add on to our adobe home. Side by side, we learned to mix the mud with straw and sand to get the right consistency to splatter and smooth over the adobe bricks. But it was the trucks I was telling you about, I am imagining the trucks. The old trucks he loved. He did not want to get rid of them even when they were leaked oil and got rusty-- though my mother prodded. I think he loved those round classic lines. I wonder what the trucks must have represented: something to do with his innate artistic aesthetic, he came from a highly educated cultured family so perhaps it was simutaneously an act of rebellion, the country rural life, the West, the poetry of traveling on Route 66 in a Chevy, independence far from the city life he had known, creating a life for himself. There is something rugged, purposeful, practical and artistic all at the same time about these trucks.

Daniel Potter's Work

The following are photographic extracts from three paintings by artist Daniel Potter. He studied and worked closely with Ann O'Hanlan for many years. Currently he lives in Fairfax in Marin County, teaches art to children and practices and teaches Buddhist meditation. I first met Daniel in 1981 when, in addition to his involvement with visual arts, he was actively involved in acting and directing a fusion of experimental and classical theatre.

Respira, respira.
Mi respiración da vueltas en espiral
como una doble hélice
extendiéndose por el universo--
Madre, madre,
la que me dio forma
está por dentro.

Por dentro y por fuera:
una curva serpentina sin fin
tan silenciosa
como reptiles tomando el sol
un flujo rítmico
un surgir y caerse.

Respira, Respira--
latido del corazón
el curso de una vida
esta mi forma femenina,
entrelazada codo a codo
con el curso de muchas vidas,
y lo que existe sin forma
el misterio justo afuera
del paso de la imaginación
dentro de esta mente

mi mente, mi forma, mi ser
creados por la madre que creó
mi madre la que es
el universo
como lo soy yo.

Te has convertido en oceano negro

a Marianne

te has convertido en oceano negro

y tiembla tiembla
aquí y ahora
sobre cerros luna luz y agua
aquí y ahora
ahora

Por Lorena Lobita Wolfman

La cara roja de la luna

Soy el velo color carmesí del luto.
Soy la cara roja de la luna.
Paso entre las hermanas de la Tierra.
Lanzo mi sombra cardinal
entre las olas, entre los surcos
de los campos arados--
Soy la oscuridad que profundiza
el sentido de la luz,
cada momento que compartimos
en este cuerpo humilde.
Pasea en mis profundas corrientes
bajo tierra, bajo tierra
ante los dioses tenebrios.
La bruma chispeante de
mi lamento te purificará,
mi abrazo como una mortaja
te mantendrá a salvo
hasta tu retorno.

Y entonces súeltame. Entrégame.
Abre tus ojos.
En tu cuerpo,
él de los sueños,
tu ser más exquisito,
acuérdate de esta,
la de carmesí,
tu vida,
que te redime.

Just once

for a. z.

you kissed me just once
it was enough
as though to say
in this life
this precious one
here is everything
summed up in an instant
fleeting and forever
how I feel about you
about living
about this night
under bare sheltering tree limbs
and a witnessing night sky
who I am, none of which I own,
and who I am, bright, leaning close
to all that is most precious
love

bay hills

bay hills rise in the moonlight
rise lifting the sky
caressing the moon
a breeze comes up across the land
shivering through dry grass of late summer
shivering past memory
shivering shivering
here now
shadows hills moon light & water
here now
now

You have become black ocean

for Marianne

you have become black ocean
your eyelids shimmer under the moon
where light & water meet
upon the skin of the manifest

I cross a footbridge backwards
across the night
from sunset to sunrise
to catch a glimpse of you

your dark hair streams out past time
to an imageless soundless peace
from which the wind and blue are born
lighting shores and green are born
mountains rivers and gold are born
waves volcanoes and purple majesty are born

overhead
overhead the stars twinkle twinkle
twinkle like round mirrors
rinsed clean
by the supple silence--
